Dugald is a firm believer in the successful integration of forestry with farming and has been planting trees for harvest for 50 years, since obtaining his forestry degree. “I haven’t ever seen a farm that couldn’t do with more trees, certainly as a way of combating problems,” he says. He has planted as few as 300 pine trees to the hectare and credits the local climate and soil type for its ability to grow tall, straight trees with small branches. He grows mainly pine with Douglas fir, Eucalyptus and Cypress all for timber. Carbon credits on existing plantings he sees as a bankable asset for farmers. “We also plant for stock shelter and ease of mustering,” he says. “For 20 years, we’ve had great grazing under the trees. Cattle and deer love it.
