Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Switzer’s Valley Transport Ltd A passionate mix of experienced hands and rising rural operators is powering the growth of Southland-based Switzer’s Valley Transport, where director Murray ‘Hogget’ Maslin is working alongside two emerging leaders to build a thriving business known for quality service and sheer hard work. Operating a fleet of 13 trucks across livestock carting, bulk carting, and fertilizer spreading, Switzer’s Valley Transport offers a full suite of rural transport solutions from its base in Wendonside. While Hogget oversees the bulk and sowing division, younger partners Andrew ‘Jock’ Sharp and Jamie Coote are stepping up and playing increasingly vital roles in the company’s continued success. Andrew now manages the livestock side of the business and has been connected to Switzer’s Valley Transport since his school days, unofficially at first. “He used to come with me in the truck as a young schoolboy from Waikaia,” Hogget says. “He was always dead keen on trucks; it’s just in his blood. Now he’s turned that passion into a profession.” Today, Andrew runs a busy livestock division and is the go-to for many clients, known for both his people skills and deep industry know-how. “He’s right into it - there’s not much going on that he doesn’t know about,” Hogget adds. “He’s a natural. He knows how to run a truck and a business, and he gets on brilliantly with our farmers.” Fellow partner Jamie is also making his mark. Currently driving one of the company’s livestock trucks, he’s preparing to move into a more hands-on operations role, supporting long-time operations manager Jock. “Jock’s flat out, so Jamie stepping into the office will make a real difference,” Hogget says. “He’s organised, switched on, and because he’s been out there on the trucks, he understands what’s needed. He’ll bring another layer of structure to help us keep pace with demand.” Switzer’s Valley Transport has seen less downtime than usual this winter thanks to a favourable run of conditions. Sowings and top dressings, which typically pause in June and July, have continued longer than expected. “There hasn’t been much downtime this winter,” Hogget notes. “We’ve even managed to keep top dressing through months we’d usually be parked up. The ground’s been that good, we’ve worked paddocks we’d normally avoid.” The extended workload has meant less time for winter maintenance. Keeping a modern, electronics-heavy fleet in top shape - especially when working with corrosive fertilizers - is no small feat. “Superphosphate’s the worst thing on a chassis,” says Hogget. “And everything’s computerized now, with electronic boxes all over the place. It makes maintenance a whole different ball game.” Switzer’s Valley Transport carts throughout Southland and as far as the North Island. Backed by Martinborough & Mid Canterbury Transport as a recent investor, the business is well positioned for continued growth - without losing the hands-on, owner-operator feel that sets it apart. “With Jock and Jamie coming through, we’ve got a strong future,” Hogget says. “It’s still hands-on, still rural, and we’re proud to be part of the farming community.” At the core of that success is a dedicated team of experienced drivers, many of whom have been with the company for years. Their hard work, loyalty, and deep understanding of the industry and the people they serve are what truly keep the wheels turning. “We wouldn’t be where we are without our team,” Hogget says. “They’re out there in all conditions, doing the hard yards, and a lot of them have been with us a long time. Without good staff, it wouldn’t flow the way it does.” Switzer’s Valley Transport is also deeply grateful for the ongoing support of the farming community - the backbone of their business. “Our farmers are the reason we’re here,” Hogget says. “They stick by us, and we do our best to return the favour every day.
