Based in the Teviot Valley, the business is run by Andrew Abercrombie and his father Brian, who started the company 19 years ago. Andrew took the reins 10 years ago, and between the two of them they continue to offer a hands-on, personal approach to everything from deer fencing and cattle yards to residential fences and automated gates. “Dad and I are a good team,” Andrew says. “We’ve both had several years working on farms, so we understand how important good fencing is to a farming operation. It’s not just keeping stock in, it’s about stock flow, safety, and saving time every day.” With their farming backgrounds, the Abercrombies bring more than just technical skills, they bring practical knowledge that helps their clients make smart decisions. “We’ve worked big stations and small blocks,” Andrew says. “We know what it takes to run a mob of sheep through a tight set of yards or keep deer in across steep country. That knowledge means we can suggest fencing solutions that really work for the land and stock.” Abercrombie Fencing handles everything but stone walls, including commercial chain link, security fencing, and macrocarpa post-and-rail, an increasingly popular option for lifestyle clients. While macrocarpa may not last as long as treated pine, Andrew says it’s a customer favourite for its natural look and sustainability. While Abercrombie Fencing sources macrocarpa from Boundaryline, all its other timber is locally sourced from Stuart Timber in Tapanui. “They’re just half an hour up the road from me and they always go the extra mile. Good product, great people, and they’re family-run too. We like working with suppliers who are like us.” The fencing game has changed a lot since the early days of Brian’s single ute and towed post driver. Today, Abercrombie Fencing uses tractors, diggers, and plate compactors to deliver highquality, long-lasting results, often collaborating with local contractors like Digger Dave to get the job done efficiently. While the business has scaled back from employing a full team, a tough call made during a quieter period a few years ago, Andrew says the two-man crew still tackles large projects, just at their own pace.
