Karen Phelps After seven years of sharefarming bulls with Te Mania Angus, Hamish Haugh is taking the next step in his breeding operation’s evolution with The Sisters Angus’s inaugural bull sale this October. “It’s a big milestone for us. Our association with Te Mania has given us a real boost and given me confidence in our cattle to have our own sale.” Located on the family’s 750-hectare property at Parnassus, halfway between Amberley and Kaikoura, the stud’s foundation stretches back to 1990, when Hamish’s parents Lindsay and Mavis purchased breeding stock from a dispersal sale. What began as an interest in quality cattle has evolved into a fully registered operation where all females carry stud registration and comprehensive performance recording tracks growth and carcass data. “My father was very production driven and we’ve tried to carry that on as well as breeding cows that keep good body condition, moderate mature weight with good production and carcass attributes,” says Hamish. The Sisters Angus supplies 130-150 Angus steers annually to the Ashburton feedlot, targeting 490 kilograms liveweight as yearling steers. “With the long history with Five Star Beef we’ve always been interested in good early growth rates for our calves, good temperament and ease of handling,” explains Hamish. The inaugural sale, scheduled for 16th October via online platform Bidr, will offer approximately 20 yearling bulls.
