Business Rural South Spring 2026

Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Renner Fencing Contractors Ltd For more than half a century, Renner Fencing has adapted to changing markets across Marlborough. Now, as vineyard development slows and competition intensifies, the long- established family business is again evolving, expanding its reach into security, commercial, and residential fencing while remaining firmly committed to the rural sector. Director Mike Renner says the downturn in Marlborough’s wine industry has flowed through the wider economy, reducing demand for vineyard fencing and creating a more competitive market for contractors. While sheep and beef farming continues to generate steady work, there are now more fencing businesses competing for fewer projects. Despite the softer conditions, Renner Fencing has remained resilient. Annual turnover reduced from $3.4 million to $2.6 million over the past year, but Mike says the business has weathered difficult cycles before by diversifying its services rather than relying on one sector. That strategy has seen the company secure major security fencing contracts well beyond Marlborough, including projects in Nelson and Palmerston North. Recent work has included security fencing and sliding gate installations at Palmerston North Airport for Calder Stewart, along with projects for transport operator Bascik Transport and commercial developments closer to home, including fencing for a new eye surgery in Nelson. Working further afield has relied on relationships with trusted local FCANZ contractors. Mike says collaborating with Palmerston North contractor Bang It Fencing has allowed projects to run efficiently, with the local team assisting with temporary fencing, accommodation, and labour while gaining experience in specialist security fencing systems. Although travelling increases costs, Mike says trusted partnerships make it worthwhile, particularly for repeat clients who value quality workmanship and reliable delivery. The changing market is also creating new opportunities. As vineyards are removed across Marlborough, Mike expects changing land use to generate demand for new fencing as properties transition into orchards, garlic production, cropping, or pastoral farming. Some vineyard owners are also holding land until grape production becomes viable again. Renner Fencing has also continued growing its residential work, an area Mike describes as considerably more complex than rural fencing. Underground services, traffic management, coordination with multiple trades, and strict compliance requirements all add pressures that are rarely encountered on farms. He says maintaining quality remains non negotiable, even when clients or developers seek to reduce costs. The company declines work where specifications compromise durability, preferring to protect its reputation rather than return later to repair avoidable failures. Alongside business diversification, Mike is equally focused on developing the next generation of fencing contractors. Renner Fencing has partnered with training organisations including Papa Taiao Earthcare and Rural Skills Education Coordinator Tracy Bateman through REAP Marlborough to introduce young people to the trade. Recent training days have seen students helping construct fences under the supervision of experienced contractors, learning everything from wire running to installing stays and strainer assemblies. More training is planned with Kaikoura students, while several participants are preparing to compete in fencing competitions during the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand conference. Mike says supporting young people into the industry is an investment in its future rather than a commercial exercise, giving students practical experience while providing farmers with affordable fencing completed under professional supervision. By continuing to diversify, invest in people, and uphold its reputation for quality, Renner Fencing is ensuring the business remains well placed for whatever comes next. SECURITY. FENCING. SOLUTIONS.
