GO FOR GOLD WITH RAMS FROM PETERS GENETICS PERFORMANCE, PRODUCTION & PRICE - THE WINNING COMBO “We work on ‘what can be measured can be managed’, so we can look at individuals and see their life history and that’s how we’re able to make more informed selections for traits such as worm tolerance, meat yield, growth rates, and milking ability because we’ve recorded the data for each animal” explains Cameron. Unlike many other sheep farmers, the Blacks have chosen to maintain their 37-micron wool quality despite a market that for 20 years has rendered it nearly worthless. Now that wool prices are on the rise that decision looks like paying for itself. “We’ve always focused on the longer term, so you still want a dual-purpose animal that brings good quality wool with the fertility and lamb survival, the growth rate and the meat yield as well. As part of our breeding programme, we are placing increasing emphasis on ease of stock management with things like dag scoring and worm tolerance, to try and reduce the workload and breed an easy care sheep,” says Cameron. “We see our role as stud breeders as doing the hard work for the commercial farmers, and to supply them with the genetics which will reduce their workload, improve their return per head of stock on the farm, and give them a better work-life ratio, which is important for the new generation of farmers,” adds Raewyn. The Black family will have their top Coopworth, Suffolk and Suftex rams for sale through January 2026, with genetics selected over nearly 50 years to breed a highly fertile, productive and easy-care animal.
