Last year in November Nithdale held its fourth annual elite ram sale which featured particularly strong demand for terminal genetics, with strong meat schedules and favourable store sheep economics encouraging some farmers to shift towards more terminal-focused systems. “So we sold out all of the Suftex terminal rams and had to start selling some of the top ram lambs as well to make up some of the numbers. That was very encouraging.” At the same time, Russell expects renewed interest in dual-purpose sheep as wool prices improve and some farmers reassess breeding strategies. Nithdale has long selected for wool production within its Romney flock and that emphasis is likely to increase. This season the stud is also comparing high-index Romney-Texel genetics against traditional terminal sires to evaluate their performance under commercial conditions. The station’s long-standing focus on worm resistance also continues to attract attention. As awareness of drench resistance grows, more farmers are seeking genetics that can help reduce parasite challenges within their flocks. “We’re getting a lot more phone calls around worm resistance and what we’re doing.”
