76 | Six decades supporting the farming community Rogers Yamaha Kids Camp 2026. Russell Fredric RURAL SERVICES » Croton Motorcyles 2023 T/A Rogers More than 60 years after the first Yamaha motorcycle was sold from its Invercargill showroom, Rogers Yamaha continues to support Southland’s farming community while building on a proud local legacy. Taking over such an established dealership in 2023 carried plenty of responsibility for owner Jamie Croton, who already had a long association with the business. As a youngster, he joined trail rides with families connected to the dealership before building a career in heavy transport, agricultural trucking, auto electrical work and plant equipment. “There was a lot of pressure. As a kid I was actually going motorbike riding during trail rides with the Rogers, so there’s a bit of history there. To be taking on their legacy was a wee bit of pressure. The first Yamaha was sold here in October 1964, so we’re nearly 62 years in the same building.” Rather than changing a business that was already working well, Jamie has focused on practical improvements behind the scenes while preserving the customer service Rogers Yamaha has long been known for. Cloud-based systems have streamlined administration, while a purpose-built large trailer enables the team to collect more motorcycles and ATVs in one trip, reducing transport costs for rural customers. The dealership also continues to invest in its workshop as motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides become increasingly sophisticated. Electronic power steering, advanced engine management systems, radar-assisted safety technology and evolving emissions requirements all demand specialist diagnostic equipment and ongoing technician training. As an authorised Yamaha dealer, Rogers Yamaha works closely with Yamaha New Zealand, drawing on factory technical support and product information. The workshop also services a wide range of motorcycle brands, with workshop manager Stu Kennedy’s Harley-Davidson expertise broadening the dealership’s capability. Farming remains central to the business. About 90% of motorcycle sales and around 75% of servicing is farm-related, from Yamaha AG farm bikes and ATVs to seasonal servicing before calving and lambing. Loan bikes help farmers stay operational during those busy periods. “You can’t have anything break down during calving or lambing. We grab the bike, drop off a loan bike so they can carry on looking after their ‘animals’. The main thing is keeping the wheels turning.” Rogers Yamaha supports numerous Southland community organisations and events, reflecting Jamie’s belief that successful local businesses should give something back. Building confidence among riders has become another focus. Rogers Yamaha’s Inspiring Adventure ladies’ service nights, run with Yamaha ambassador April Mainland, give women the opportunity to learn basic dirt bike maintenance, bike setup and the simple checks that can make a difference on the trail in a relaxed, women-only environment. “There’s no guys involved, so it gives them more confidence to ask questions. I’m there as a backup, using my mechanical knowledge to answer questions and support April.” The dealership also hosts its annual Yamha BLU CRU kids and family camp on a working Southland farm, introducing young riders to off-road riding through trail rides, activities and camping. This year’s event attracted 150 people, including about 80 children. Rogers Yamaha is a strong supporter of Invercargill’s annual Burt Munro Challenge, staying open during the event to help visiting riders needing repairs or replacement parts. Jamie and members of the team also compete in some Burt Munro events. • Bolt & Nuts • Masonry Bolts • Socket Products • Threaded Rods • Rivets • Screws • Self Drillers • Bolt Assortments • Stainless Steel Fasteners & Hardware • Hinges & Gate Fittings • SDS Multi-fit Masonry Drills • Drill, Taps & Die Nuts • Teng Tools 117 Clyde St, Invercargill 0800 723 100 | admin@southernbolts.co.nz www.southernbolts.co.nz SUPPORT YOUR 100% OWNED & OPERATED SHOP WHAT WE DON’T KNOW ISN’T WORTH KNOWING Thank you, Southland As Roger Yamaha Celebrates nearly 62 years of serving Southland, we’d like to sincerely thank all of our customers for your continued loyalty and support.
