82 | Rapid response repairs and workshop services Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Farm Fix It Farm Fix It is a South Otago based engineering, maintenance, and automotive business supporting farmers, contractors, and local residents across the Clutha district, providing rapid response repairs and workshop services at a time when reliability and downtime are critical pressures for rural operations. Fiona and Marty Darmody took over Farm Fix It from the previous owner 15 years ago. The business began as a farm maintenance and engineering service before expanding into automotive work and broader community servicing. Today, it operates across two closely linked divisions, with its Kaitangata based automotive workshop now a key part of the operation alongside its established rural engineering arm. Farm Fix It Automotive was launched in 2019, bringing WOFs, servicing, and general vehicle repairs to Kaitangata for the first time in years. Fiona says the move was driven by both opportunity and necessity, after a local mechanic became available. What started as an extension of the existing business has grown steadily, with customers now coming from across the wider district. Fiona says the workshop supports not only farmers but everyday motorists, with demand reflecting the value of having essential automotive services located within the town. Alongside the automotive arm, the original engineering business continues to service farms across South Otago, with Marty and his team leading heavy engineering and machinery repair work. Marty, Dave, and Aaron travel from Kaitangata, carrying out on farm breakdown repairs, servicing agricultural machinery, and supporting contractors, while other equipment is brought into the workshop for repair and fabrication work. Fiona says the two sides of the business complement each other, with agricultural contractors and farmers relying on quick turnaround times to keep operations moving. The team also undertakes work on trucks, diggers, grain silos, and dairy platforms, with experience spanning both rural infrastructure and heavy machinery maintenance. Strong supplier and contractor relationships are central to the operation. Motion supplies hydraulic and industrial components, McDonald Perinskie provides accounting and business advisory services, Rakaia Engineering supports fabrication and specialist rural engineering projects, and McElrea Electrical assists with electrical work across sheds, machinery, and farm infrastructure.
