Business Rural Summer 2021
| 25 MEAT & WOOL » Michael Mouat Hampshire breed The way the farm operates, provides the Mouat’s with year-round income. They have exported sheep to Argentina and Australia is interested in sourcing semen from New Zealand. Now, having reached a mature age, Mike says he’s beginning to look toward a future, less involved in the day to day running of the farm. “Our son has brought a bob-cat and helps out on the farm as well.” Mike is also involved in the NZ Hampshire Breeders Assn. Given the limitations that have come with COVID level restrictions, the group has only met once in the last two years. He’s pleased that three new breeders have recently joined the association. “We are looking forward to getting together once we’re through all this. At our AGM we usu- ally combine a tour to a farm and try to get all the breeders together to work on publicizing the breed and support each other.” When Rural South spoke with Mike early September, lambing had been underway a week and was going well. He says Hampshire’s are fantastic mothers. “We have a terrific drop of lambs and last year we had more triplets than singles.” He hopes to see a resurgence in interest in the Hampshire Breed and more breeders coming on board and joining the association. “Collectively we have a lot of experience and information to share with those interested in establishing their own Hampshire flock and I’m happy to talk with anyone about the benefits having this breed brings.” And while Janeann works off farm at what Mike describes as the best garden centre in the country, she is very involved in the important business functions that contribute to creating a great farming business. “Janeann has skills I don’t possess which are vital to the business. She helps at lambing time and has also grown a wonderful garden for us to enjoy.” “We are looking forward to getting together once we’re through all this. At our AGM we usually combine a tour to a farm and try to get all the (Hampshire) breeders together to work on publicizing the breed and support each other. Collectively we have a lot of experience and information to share with those interested in establishing their own Hampshire flock and I’m happy to talk with anyone about the benefits having this breed brings.” Proud to support theMouat familywith their Combining and spraying.
