Business Rural Summer 2022

100 | Fuller keen for apprenticeships again For a person wanting to pursue a fencing career, Primary ITO has a level 3 and level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Fencing. Russell Fredric FENCING » Fuller Fencing Physical, challenging and rewarding, a career in fencing is a great option for anyone who loves the outdoors. Fuller Fencing owner Simon Fuller has enjoyed his nearly three decades in the industry and says it is career pathway well worth considering, including as an alternative to working on a farm or shearing. He has a long-standing association with the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand (FCANZ) “It used to be seen as a seasonal in-between jobs type of work, but now it’s progressed to a 12 months a year business and that gives you skills to adapt to a lot of things [such as] building and landscaping,” Simon says. Like shearing, fencing is a skill that can provide opportunities to work overseas or to start up in business, he says. “Not everyone wants to sit in front of a desk and a computer screen. Out in the rural environment you see a different view every second day and meet a lot of interesting people along the way. The fencing industry has quite strong network of people around the country.” Based near Gore, Simon moved from Pirongia, Waikato eight years ago and has considerable experience in property development and fencing, from residential to land conversion such as sheep and beef, dairy conversion, dry stock and equine. He employs his son Hayden Fuller (30) and Dakota [Surname] who was recruited through a secondary school Gateway careers programme. For a person wanting to pursue a fencing career, Primary ITO has a level 3 and level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Fencing. This provides the knowledge and practical skills to repair, maintain and construct rural electric and non-electric fences and to construct and repair industrial fences. The level 4 certificate includes interpreting a livestock yard design and constructing it to meet meet the design and client specifications along with facilitating teamwork and client relationship management. Simon is passionate about the industry having a solid training programme. He is keen to see an apprenticeship reinstated that previously operated in the industry along the same lines as a trades apprenticeship and is hopeful this may be up and running in about a year. Outside of the practical aspects of fencing work, an important aspect is the advice and experience a competent fencing contractor can provide to clients, such as about the placement and flow of fences and lanes on farms. “To me, that’s a big part of my business. Being able to advise people what my thoughts are, but to leave it open to the farmers to make the final decision. One client said to me the other day we’ve never put a fence in the wrong place after completing 10 or 12 kilometres of fencing.” The industry provides for people to work as employees, subcontractors or to be self employed and although fencing is still physical, there is more machinery these days to take care of the grunty work. “There’s a lot of opportunities out there for the right sort of person. Within the industry, if you’re the right person you can go anywhere and get a job.” (03) 208 8110 - 24 hour on call service 25 Ashton Street, Gore • FOR ALL COMMERICAL & AGRICULTURAL TYRES • CAR & 4WD TYRES • CAR & 4WD WHEEL ALIGNMENTS • SUPPLIERS OF ALL BRANDS FOR ALL BUDGETS For more information contact Andrew Tripp: 0800 NITHDALE (0800 648 432) / www.nithdale.com RAM VIEWING OPEN DAY INCLUDING ELITE RAM SALE (TOP 10%) Register at www.yourbid.co.nz Nithdale Genetics is a New Zealand leader when it comes to breeding dual purpose sheep resistant to internal parasites with high productive traits.
