102 | The smartest silos in the country SMARTSILOs have a number of distinct advantages over traditional steel silos. The SMARTSILO range has revolutionised feed storage with polyethylene silos which provide a longer lasting and more hygienic storage solution than traditional steel silos. The SMARTSILO concept was developed by Advantage Plastics in collaboration with New Zealand’s largest pork producer, Patoa Farms, which needed 120 new silos for a new complex. “With their knowledge of silos and our knowledge of plastic engineering, we got together to create the smartest silo in the country,” says Advantage Plastics sales and marketing manager Jake Hickmott. “We started with one size then expanded the range with different sizes from 280L to 30Tonne capacity, now used all around New Zealand for all different applications, whether it be stock feed, grain and seed, or fertiliser.” Jake says SMARTSILOs have five distinct advantages over traditional steel silos. Firstly, polyethylene is a very unique material which has revolutionised many applications for various industries. The material used in the silo manufacture is linear medium density polyethylene (LMDPE) which combines all aspects of durability, longevity, and strength, and is environmentally friendly. As a compound based resin, the silos are UV resistant and stabilised so outside exposure to New Zealand’s harsh conditions proves to be no problem.
