104 | Smarter, faster and better buildings Every kit is triple checked before it is sent out to ensure not a single bolt or screw is missed. Kelly Deeks Alpine Buildings NZ has been widely known since the early 2000s as a national provider of specialist agricultural and farm buildings, and with its vision for providing smarter, faster, and better buildings and it drive for innovative products, has taken the shed game to a new level with the recent introduction of the UltraBay steel purli system. The UltraBay system has evolved from the demands of the market. Alpine Buildings is always listening to its customers, and when they asked for wider bays to store larger machinery and maximise storage, the Alpine Buildings team developed the UltraBay system, featuring a unique steel purlin design which provides bay widths up to 10 meters, more than twice the size of traditional bays. “We found that clients, especially those who are storing hay and implements, were wasting a lot of space in their sheds with poles and footings,” says Alpine Buildings NZ general manager Rogan Rountree. “So we looked for a way we could increase our bay sizes while still providing our market-leading, clearspan, birdproof design.” UltraBay’s unique steel purlin design is a triangular, fully enclosed member, leaving nowhere for birds to nest in the roof. The steel purlins can be supplied to the desired length, optimising bay widths to suit the specific needs of every client. With wider bays, clients are able to store more per bay, maximising their return and adding long term value to their property. The triangular shape purlin also provides maximum strength and stability, and they are able to be paired with Alpine Buildings’ signature structural steel rafter system, or a more traditional timber pole option. In the past six months, the UltraBay system has taken off. “As the product gets used more, we are seeing the most commonly requested bay sizes are 7.7m and 9.3m, along with some up to 10m for large unobstructed canopies,” Rogan says. 7.7m bays will fit three 2.4m long hay bales in snug, or enable storage for two large tractors or implements side by side. 9.3m bays will enable storage for three medium sized implements, or fit four 2.1m hay bales, with room for manoeuvering telehandlers in and out. And 10.0m bays have been most popular, as their large canopies provide additional undercover space for working on gear and parking vehicles. Not only are customers raving about the new UltraBay design, but builders are as well. “Our network of builders we have across the country are really important to us. We build trust with them, and they become advocates for the Alpine product.
