110 | Farmers now more strategic on fert use Erin Hyslop, Nick Hyslop, Sam Hyslop and Rose Hyslop at the 2021 GroundspreadNZ awards. Kim Newth In today’s rising cost environment, farmers want the assurance of precision and accuracy more than ever in their fertiliser applications. Choosing an operator with the Spreadmark tick is the best way to achieve that, says Nick Hyslop, proprietor of Oamaru-based fertiliser application company Hyslop Groundspread. “Spreadmark is a quality assurance scheme for farmers,” says Nick, who is Groundspread NZ’s Vice President and a past chairman of the organisation’s Canterbury branch. “If they see that Spreadmark logo then they know they are getting quality gear, quality drivers and a quality business model.” Nick set up Hyslop Groundspread with wife Rosalie in 2011 and is a devotee of the Spreadmark programme. He knows that having that tick is an assurance to his clientele that they are getting the most out of their fertiliser programmes, a priority for farmers today. “I’ve noticed that farmers in our region are getting more strategic this season with costs on their minds. They’re thinking a lot more about what, where and how much they’re using.” Quality Fertmark products are a popular option with many local farmers and Nick is also seeing some interest in niche products that promote soil health.
