122 | The business received a national Health & Safety Award nomination at this year’s NZ Groundspread Fertiliser Assn awards. As owner-directors of the business, Jen and Jax have to time-table into their busy daily lives time to look at the bigger picture of where the company is at and where they strategically want to see it go. That’s simpler said than done some times. “I remember one time we had a directors meeting with Jen actually on a spreader truck driving. I had a list of all the things I wanted to cover off in our meeting and it took hours to get there but we did,” says Jax Having a business mentor also helps. The two say they wouldn’t be where they are now without the guidance of Neil Reid. Looking ahead they know they don’t want to grow any bigger in terms of fleet size. “We’re just wanting to work smarter,” says Jax. And that way of working on the business has been recognised in achieving a national Health & Safety Award nomination at this year’s NZ Groundspread Fertiliser Assn awards, at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. “The experience was amazing for us, to be seen by the industry as having achieved excellence in Health & Safety operation was just wonderful. We actually came second but the judges said it was so close so we prefer to think that we came first equal,” says Jax. Being a member of the organisation is important they say. It means they are in the best position to learn new things and to help them secure more work. Asked how it has been since their Dad passed away three years ago, Jen and Jax say they didn’t quite understand his legacy until his passing. “We were blown. away by how many knew Dad and sent letters and flowers. We know absolutely what we’ve achieved since and its with Dad sitting on our shoulders watching over us,” says Jen. RURAL SERVICES » Renwick Transport Ltd • from page 120 Proudly supporting .
