Tracy Burrows says they were rapt at the win. At the awards the company was described as having a culture of innovation in their logging methods with exemplary health and safety and environmental principles. The company was also acknowledged for bringing a professional standard to forest harvesting and being dedicated to a high measure of training and skills for its crew. “We have a hell of a good culture with our crew,” says Tracy, “and by continuing to innovate with the mechanised gear, that really helps us to do the job and keeps people safe.” The main on-site crew is made up of eight people, including Tracy Burrows and Michael May. The company’s work in encouraging young people to look at forestry work as a career option was also praised at the awards. Helen May often assists with forestry sessions, organised in conjunction with the Wood Council, at local schools or brings out secondary school students to show them how logging works in the plantation forests. She says the primary school students particularly love seeing the big logging trucks, with the bigger the truck the bigger the delight. She also helps to host visits, organised by Port Blakely Ltd, by local high school students to show them the ins and outs of forestry from planting to harvesting. Their current foreman started out as a work experience student visiting once a week while at high school.
