90 | Excellence in health & safety Throughout Canterbury, Otago and Southland, Dynes is a leading partner of choice for the transportation of logs, sawn timber and woodchips. Kim Newth Dynes Transport has made some big changes to significantly improve safety for their team in recent years. Their proactive stance has not gone unnoticed. I n August, Dynes received the Forestry/Wood Products Health and Safety Excellence Award at the 2022 Southern Wood Council (SWC) Forestry Awards. While primarily a night to profile the contribution of forestry and celebrate the industry’s training success stories, the awards event also shone a spotlight on valued industry partners with Dynes honoured as an outstanding safety champion. Throughout Canterbury, Otago and Southland, Dynes is a leading partner of choice for the transportation of logs, sawn timber and woodchips. Forestry has been a core part of business for Dynes for more than 50 years. “It was great for us to be acknowledged in the mix as part of the forestry supply chain,” says Matt Horan, CEO of Dynes Group. “It was a fantastic night and was well-supported by forestry owners too.” Winning this award marks the culmination of a unique journey for Dynes that embarked on a major overhaul of health and safety practices several years ago to reduce accident risks. “We made a commitment to change the shape of who we are as a business. We’ve always had a big focus on safety but the processes around it had become too complicated. We realised that we needed to simplify safety and give people at the frontline a voice in meaningful change too.” Feedback from drivers paved the way to the setting up of a new Peoples Safety Council and the appointment of independent chair Wiremu FORESTRY » Dynes Transport Edmonds, a leading campaigner on forestry safety. The role of the council is to give recommendations and potential solutions on safety concerns. As Matt observes, there are no company managers on the council; it is an entirely staff-run vehicle generating feedback on safety concerns and ideas on how to solve them. “One of the biggest steps we have taken through the Council is to address the topic of fatigue. Logbooks have been the traditional control within the industry for managing fatigue, but it’s only one form of control. We made the call as a business that fatigue is a complex topic and therefore made the decision to implement a control – driver-facing fatigue cameras - that could specifically detect fatigue in real time to help support our staff and give us the ability to proactively address fatigue. It has led to at least four people’s lives being saved at a minimum and has ultimately set us apart as a safe transport operator.” Drivers with Dynes have backed the technology as an effective safety tool that protects them, their families and other road users. If a driver has a persistent problem with fatigue, Dynes will support them with a health assessment and further follow up, such as a sleep apnoea programme. Forward-facing cameras have also been introduced that enable drivers to capture risks they face on the road. The forestry industry applauds Dynes’ proactive steps on safety and training. Dynes is training the next generation of drivers through the Dynes Academy that helps them to gain the right training and experience to become the best in the transport industry.
