Rosa Watson Vet South in Southland has undergone huge expansion in recent years to now offer worldclass veterinary services that cover the full spectrum of animal health. Eighteen years ago, Central Southland Vets at Winton and Gore Vets combined to become Vet South. “We had always worked together ... and then we sort of thought this works well for clients as far as getting access to specialties. Maybe we should look at a more commercial operation,” director Mark Bryan told Rural South. And it was a move that would prove hugely successful. There are now around 55 vets across the group, with clinics in Balclutha, Clydevale, Gore, Lumsden, Otautau, Tapanui, Winton and Invercargill that cover the full range of veterinary services. Mark said the expanding operation had allowed the practice to keep up with the larger players in the industry. “We thought maybe if we are a bigger entity that might give us more sustainability. “We’ve got a breadth of services that we haven’t had before. In the past (clients) would have had to have gone up to Christchurch. The range and scope of services also helped the business attract talent to the south. “It’s given us the capability to attract and retain good people down south. “Vets today want the support of a bigger team. They also want different career options. “In the past we would have lost them.” This included work in dairy, sheep and beef and in equine and companion animals through the Invercargill centre, which includes an extensive equine facility. The multi-million-dollar clinic has grown from two consulting rooms to five plus an ultra sound suite and a family consult suite, has three operating theatres, and recently built six new stables and an isolation box that can accommodate a large number of horses including special boxes for mares and foals. “We’ve always had a well-resourced equine facility, but now with extending the stables we can take on more surgeries. They are also looking at installing a radioactive iodine treatment for cats that have thyroid disease that they hope to have operational next year. In earlier years, the group didn’t have anyone on the team that could assist large animal vets. Now we’ve got 30 to 40 large animal technicians.
