| 113 ON FARM » Heasley Fencing and Earthworks Quality materials & a job well done Heasley Fencing and Earthworks specialise in hill and high country fencing, vineyard development, and now even ‘Smart Electrics’ security fencing. The North Canterbury-based business owner has upskilled his qualifications considerably over the past few years. Aimee Wilson Scott Heasley said he was quite surprised and wasn’t expecting to win an Excellence Award at the Fencing Contractors Association of NZ awards - despite being in the game more than 30 years. The North Canterbury-based business owner has upskilled his qualifications considerably over the past few years, and is now focusing on the rest of the team at Heasley Fencing as well. “I have quite a bit of knowledge of things and have learnt from things that went wrong,” he said. Specialising in hill and high country fencing, vineyard development, and now even ‘Smart Electrics’ security fencing, the business has plenty of diversity and a loyal customer base. “We take pride on using good quality materials for a job well done.” The electric fencing design, complete with shock, alarm, message to your smart phone and instant security, comes from a combination of Edgesmith, Warratah and Beattie Products, and works well on both deer fencing and horse rails. “We have come up with a system that is really reliable,” he said. The team love working up in the high country eating lunch on the top of a hill, and Scott has his son involved in the business along with other trainees and general staff as well. They also carry out earthworks projects - Heasley Fencing has completed bollards, paths and fences for the Hurunui District Council, and the team was currently helping establish a vineyard at Lincoln University. But soon they’ll be back up in the high country hill fencing again, using quality Permapine round woods, Warratah steel products and Beattie insulators. “I’m just passionate about doing a top notch job, and now I’m back on the tools a bit more, instead of just running the business,” he said. Heasley Fencing uses a D31 Bulldozer with a post driver and a digger with rock breakers, as well as two diggers with compactor plates and a six-wheeler tipper truck and low loader. “It’s all reliable equipment which is necessary for such a specialised industry, and important for producing good quality work under certain time frames.” FCANZ offered a new Level 4 qualification that has upskilled everyone in the industry, the course was split into five parts - which involved both designing and building a set of cattle yards, and high country fencing. But it also delved more into the business side of fencing, and students had to show how they would deal with everything from employment conflict, health and safety and right through to the structure of the company. Scott also shows his support to the rural sector through being involved in the ‘Lean on a gate, talk to a mate,’ initiative for mental health. Proud to support Heasley Fencing and Earthworks The future for Heasley Fencing looks good with his son and other staff (2 in total) about to complete their Level 3 FCANZ qualification. The Level 4 Excellence award recognised the graduate of the NZQA National Certificate in Fencing Level 4 who consistently displayed excellence across their coursework. Judges identified that Scott as a true asset to the fencing industry.
