Farm and Stock Managers attend three ‘Focus Days’ a year. These get the managers and stock managers off farm and looking at their business ‘from the balcony rather being on the dance floor’. These days usually encompass a field trip to look at a business or another farming operation. “For the last 18 month we have included a Leadership coach at these days to help build the leadership skills of our management team - to make sure that we are developing our next batch of leaders. Managers, Stock Managers and more experienced Block Managers have monthly sessions with the GM and Business Manager focusing on financial topics, helping them to get an understanding of what is required as a Farm Manager in the financial and budgeting space.” The 2IC group, facilitated by farm consultant Pete Young, aims to broaden the Block Managers and some of the shepherds farming knowledge and meets five times a year. “We are trying to prepare them for more senior roles in the future. It is also a good opportunity for staff across the farms to catch-up and see how our other farms operate.” Primary ITO courses are encouraged as part of the staff’s Personal Development Plans, to help staff complete these courses managers often set time aside during the week for the staff member to complete their paper work. • from page 50 • to page 54
