Business Rural Summer 2024

60 | Peter Adam scaling up the operation Peter has 1200ha at the run, another 570ha on the home farm and 242ha down at Waipahi. Randall Johnston West Otago -based sheep farmer Peter Adam says conditions were favorable in spring and 8000 ewes went to the ram this season. Peter has 1200ha at the run, located half an hour north-east of Gore, and another 570ha on the home farm (which is about 14 kilometres away from the run) and 242ha down at Waipahi, which is 20 minutes directly east of Gore and used for finishing. The company that own’s Wilden Station (the Maisey Group) have owned the Waipahi block for about six years. Peter says it has come in very handy in that time in regard to stock finishing, among other benefits, although it is somewhat drought prone, which presents some challenges in the mid to late summer. Waipahi winters about 2,500 hoggets for finishing in the spring and about 250 18 month cattle The Waipahi block, managed by Peter Standish, has had a new water scheme and has been extensively re-grassed in shorter term rotation grasses, as Peter found that the red clover that had been planted out at Waipahi was maturing too late to fatten lambs, which are generally killed in August. Standish was originally managing the run, but made the move south soon after the purchase went through. Other staff include Paige Elwood and Glen Miller (who is now managing the big 1200ha run). There is a bit of fencing that needs to be done on the run and other general maintenance jobs but the farms are always kept tidy and in good working order. With 2,100 breeding hoggets and 342 cows (also well up from 235 last season) and just over 300 MEAT & WOOL » Peter Adam Performance & quality you can trust multi Award winning Since 1924 The #1 nationally bench marked commercial ock for performance in pure Romneys again in 2024.
