62 | The future is looking bright for Peter and the team. calves over kale and fodder beet, on the northern farms - it’s a busy operation that requires a lot of oversight. Genetics-wise on the beef side of the operation they using are mostly Argyle Angus. “We also have some low birth weight bulls to go the heifers and the rest all go to Simmental bulls from Hill Springs,” Peter explains. The cows are mainly Angus and Angus cross and split into two mobs. The breeding mob has an Angus bull put over the cows, while the other uses Simmental. “The Simmental have good growth and weights, our two year olds are averaging 300kg plus at the works.” Between the farms more than 15,500 stock units are run. Genetics on the sheep side are sourced mainly from Rawahi Romneys (Richard Warren of Featherston) and and Grassendale (George Williams of Tinui, near Masterton. Some Suftex rams from Fernvale Genetics (neighbor Lloyd Brensell, also of Tapanui)) and Texel rams from Waikaka Genetic’s. The sheep flock is also split into two, one that heads to the big run block that will be put to a Romney for breeding. The replacements also come from this flock. Coming off the back of two disappointing lambing seasons, Paul is focused on upping the lambing percentage and he looks to be on the right track. “The two tooths scanned the best we ever have this year so that’s great. The A mob did 170, and the B mob (about a quarter of the total flock) did 172. The best we’ve done previously was 165, so we are pretty happy with this result.” With efforts to up production now starting to pay off; the future is looking bright for Peter and the team well into 2025. “The two tooths scanned the best we ever have this year so that’s great.
