It is also home to Pikoburn Angus Stud. Alton Devery was just a year old when his parents bought the home farm, a challenging 450 acres of flat land and native bush. That was in 1972. By the 1980s, much of the bush had been cleared and at the height of Rogernomics era, a young Alton, his brother Wilson and their parents purchased another 300 acres of hill block at the back of their farm. Fast forward to 2024. Alton and wife Isobel now own the farm, lease another 600 acres five kilometres from the home farm gate and another 200 acres next door. “We’re running about 3500 ewes and nearly 1000 hoggets this year,” Alton says. “The ewes are very low maintenance and easy care. We have a small stud of 100 black faced ewes and breeding rams for our own use.” Alton’s passion for the past 30-40 years has been his Angus Stud. “We’re calving 85 cows and 15 heifers. Our breeding bulls have been carefully selected, not only for their ability to produce superb progeny, but for their hardy characteristics, with the ever-changing environment.” Pikoburn Stud is his father’s legacy, begun in 1978 with mostly North Island East Coast genetics MEAT & WOOL » Pikoburn Angus renowned to produce strong, sound, early maturing progeny. “Most of our clients are in Southland and Otago, although we do send a few bulls to the West Coast, so when I’m purchasing bulls, I’m very cautious about what I buy. The animal must have a good spring of rib and do-ability”.
