Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Avenel Agriculture The rugged high country landscape of Central Otago’s Avenel Station has been shaped by three generations of the Garden family, with a fourth generation already showing keen interest in continuing the legacy of the diverse farming operation. “They are all pretty keen on the farm, enjoying the animals and stockwork,” says Austin Garden, speaking of his children Honor (16), Leo (15), India (13), and Freida (12), who represent the next generation of farmers at the 2700-hectare property. The station, which rises to 1000 metres in parts at Millers Flat, has been in the Garden family for more than 50 years, originally purchased in partnership by Austin’s grandfather, father and uncle. Today the property runs 11500 stock units including 5300 ewes, 230 cows, and 300 hinds, representing a significant evolution in the family’s farming operations. A recent major change saw the family sell their 290-hectare dairy farm at Heriot, West Otago, which ran 700 cross-bred cows, as part of their succession process. “I can now be much more hands on. Before I was running this farm and the dairy farm. It’s a much better lifestyle,” explains Austin. The farm operates as a true family business with Austin’s wife Victoria managing the bookwork and helping with farm work as needed while their children are actively involved in the farm as well. This collaborative approach ensures the younger generation gains hands-on experience in all aspects of farm management. “I love living on a farm and sharing it with my family. We run, mountain bike, hunt and camp on the farm. My favourite time of year is holidays when all the kids are home and we all go out farming together,” says Austin. Over the past four decades the Gardens have demonstrated their commitment to long-term sustainability through extensive forestry development, planting radiata pine and Douglas fir in plantations and shelter belts. For the past decade, they’ve been harvesting these trees adding another dimension to the diverse agricultural portfolio. Despite current industry challenges Austin maintains an optimistic outlook. “Tight financial times bring a focus on cost structure and you come out the other end with a much more efficient system,” says Austin. This pragmatic approach has helped the family navigate through various industry cycles while continuing to develop their property. The Gardens are also embracing modern farming practices and environmental considerations. “It’s not just about physical changes, it’s also a change of mindset and it doesn’t happen overnight,” explains Austin. “Farmers are now starting to see there are things we can do that are quite easy but make a big difference.” While current financial constraints have temporarily limited development plans, the family maintains its focus on efficiency and sustainable growth. Their approach to farming combines traditional high-country farming practices with modern innovation, ensuring the property remains viable for future generations. As the Garden children grow and become more involved in the farm’s operations, Avenel Station stands as a testament to the enduring nature of family farming in New Zealand, where each generation builds upon the foundation laid by those before them while adapting to the challenges and opportunities of their time. “I can now be much more hands on. Before I was running this farm and the dairy farm. It’s a much better lifestyle. “I love living on a farm and sharing it with my family.” Partners: Doug Harvie, Craig Wyatt, Brett Challis, Robyn Friedrich and Tom Saul.
