The packhouse operates two shifts Monday to Friday. Richard Loader Cederman Bros Ltd journey started in 1975 when brothers Peter and Russell Cederman bought some land in the Riwaka area, ten minutes’ drive west of Motueka, and started growing tobacco, apples and some pears. No doubt the brothers were influenced by their father who had a smaller patch of land growing a similar mix — particularly back in the day when Motueka used to be New Zealand’s tobacco- growing centre. After the government removed the requirement for some New Zealand-grown tobacco in locally produced cigarettes in the early 1980s, the crop was no longer profitable and Cederman Bros replaced tobacco with kiwifruit before that too was phased out in 2010. Today, still family owned and operated, Cederman Bros has 82 hectares planted in apples in the Riwaka area and all within a couple of kilometres of the main packhouse / coolstore area. Operations Manager Duncan Cederman is the third-generation family member to be involved in the family business. Cederman Bros has transitioned away from the traditional varieties favoured by the UK / European and American markets, to the newer high colour strains, and varieties that grow bigger and sweeter that are destined for the Asian market.
