Business Rural Summer 2024

74 | Green Contracting expanded its services Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Green Contracting Oamaru “I think we might have the best drill in the area,” Brett says. “The difference with this drill is it does 375mm spacings between the seeds, rather than the traditional 500mm. This helps to provide a quicker canopy cover with the plants growing closer together. The leaves of each plant touch the one next door for shade and less weed growth.” Green Contracting is currently precision planting fodder beet seeds for a growing customer base and is set to start planting swedes heading in to summer. “With us being a small business, we are available for our clients within a few days. There is no waiting list with us.” This has been a tough season for everyone but in North Otago, a summer drought saw Green Contracting cease baling on February 20, when normally it would continue until the first week of May. Brett says the decision to expand was made in good times and with an order put in to Power Farming, the downturn wasn’t going to stop it. “We were committed to growing,” Brett says. “Both Power Farming and CLAAS Harvest Centre were amazing to deal with in regards to getting our finance sorted. They knew how tough it was out there.” Brett and his wife Annette have put Michael in charge of Green Contracting’s precision planting division, leaving him to liaise with clients, organise his schedule, and really get a taste of the contracting life. At home on the farm, their daughter Gemma has been put in charge of the calf rearing business, where she has grown about 250 fourday-old calves up to 85kgs this year. Brett and Annette want their young adult children to try out the industry before getting tied up in it, and are really proud of their efforts so far. Brett brings to each job 20 plus years of experience and the promise of honest work for a fair price. He has grown Green Contracting from a fencing business into baling then mulching, which is a key service for the company through the winter. With machinery and equipment supplied by Agriline, Green Contracting has been clearing riverbeds for flood protection for the past few years around Otago and Canterbury, where Brett will travel with his campervan keeping overheads down and providing a cost-effective solution for clients. He’s gone out and found a market for precision planting, so we’ve let the dog off the chain.” Brett says the bigger contracting companies are offering a one-stop-shop and Green Contracting is on its way to becoming the same. Working with the local Power Farming and CLAAS Harvest Centre to bring in the new equipment, both companies provided solutions that considered the state of the market as well as the very latest gear.
