Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Nick Wilson Contracting Continuous reinvestment into plant and machinery has seen Nick Wilson Contracting in Clinton grow into a one-stop contracting shop offering all classes of cultivation, seeding, baleage, and digger and bulldozer works across South Otago and Northern Southland. Nick started his contracting business aged 18, with a view to farm ownership. His dad was still running the family sheep, beef, and arable farm, so Nick bought himself a tractor and a plough and went ploughing for local farmers. “You’ve got to make a bit of money along the way to go farming,” he says. “So I made a bit and carried on reinvesting back into the business and that’s how we got to where we are now, with 14 tractors, three diggers, a bulldozer and grader, and six really good permanent full-time staff.” Keeping these guys busy was a key driver of Nick Wilson Contracting’s diversification. As well as working in agriculture, the company’s earthmoving capabilities brings other opportunities in the construction and forestry sectors. Nick also did end up buying two farms where there is always something for the team to work on. “The farms are really good for staff retention, which is a big issue for our industry. You’re only as good as your staff, and we’ve got a really good team of permanent staff as well as four or five casuals. They get on well and they enjoy what they do.” As farmers battle rising costs across the board, Nick Wilson Contracting focuses on providing value for money solutions and good quality jobs.
