Highlights this year have included three days with world record-holding shearer Stacey Te Huia, sharing his expertise across all aspects from nutrition, handpiece setup and gear preparation to sheep handling, footwork and shearing technique. In July, renowned Southland chef Ethan Flack and award-winning NZ butcher James Smith (aka The Tattooed Butcher) guided the cadets through a full pasture-to-plate experience from butchery to cooking, learning and feasting. A new killing shed on farm is enabling cadets to learn the essentials of modern butchery and how to break down an animal. Over the past two years, Jeff Farm has noticed a big jump in interest from young people in their cadetships with another large turnout at this year’s Open Day in August. “It’s good for the farm and good for agriculture that we have young people who are keen to get into farming. We’ve had over 20 applications from all over the South Island for our three cadetships starting next year.”
