We saw potential for Red Devons not only as efficient producers on marginal country but also as ideal sires for dairy heifer mating, especially with the industry moving away from Jersey-sired bobby calves.” The cattle serve a practical purpose grazing the property’s challenging country unsuitable for Wagyu or dairy heifers, complementing the other aspects of the farm. But the main focus is to supply bulls to the dairy industry, producing polled, low birth weight calves that grow fast, mature early and yield premium quality beef. “Above all, our animals must be structurally sound, calm and capable of thriving with minimal input.” He is working towards a polled herd, reflecting changing market preferences, with 10-12 bull calves sold privately each year, primarily through TradeMe. Carl leases the property from his parents, Lynn and Barry, with succession planning firmly in view. Barry continues to help during busy periods and Carl’s wife Sarah takes a very active role despite being mother to Finn, 4, Lilli, 2 and expecting their third child in January. A veterinarian by trade, Sarah handles much of the animal health work alongside farm administration and helping out in other aspects as required.
