Richard says that he is always interested in talking to good young people wanting to become drivers. “If they have driving in their blood and I can see a good work ethic, then we’ll take them on and provide full training. That’s the investment we’re prepared to put into someone we feel will fit well into our business and work hard.” Richard says that a successful business cannot operate without good staff. “We’ve got a great team of loyal people and a very supportive team at HWR.” He also says an ongoing commitment to training and developing excellent operating systems has future-proofed the business. “This gives me great confidence in my role and our company’s future within the rural transport sector.” And with growth in mind, finding more qualified and skilful drivers always presents as a challenge, however Richard says operating out of a small rural community, word of mouth is a great advertiser. “Good trucks and gear tend to attract good driv- ers as well.” Currently Ranfurly Transport’s fleet comprises 11 stocks trucks, 7 general/bulk trucks, four sowers, two freight trucks and two concrete trucks. And while there’s a strong seasonal flow to what the company transports, the weather can have an impact. “If we have a drought then we’re busy transport- ing stock off farms which don’t have sufficient feed to carry them,” Richard explains.
