Business Rural Winter 2021
108 | Transport Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Perrins Transport O waka based Perrins Transport has reached a significant milestone – 58 years in business. “It’s just another day,” says company owner Alistair Perrin. “We’ve been too busy looking after customers to think about celebrating.” It’s a typical modest response for a business that has successfully been meeting the transport needs of farmers in the region for decades. It was Alistair’s father Eddie who purchased the company back in the day. A logger by trade, it was a big change of career for Eddie. The Latta brothers, a couple of local farmers, were also shareholders in the business, but it was up to Eddie to run the company on a day-to-day ba- sis. Eddie purchased a 10 acre property at 24 Royal Terrace where he lived with his family and that’s where the company was shifted to and operated from. It’s still in the same location today and Alistair has now worked in the company for over 50 years. Under Eddie’s leadership the company grew and grew to what it is in 2021. It is now owned solely by Alistair and Gary Wynyard. Gary also owns Wynyard Transport in Milton, leaving Alistair to run Perrins Transport on a day-to-day basis in Owaka. The two companies work in together to deliver an even bet- ter service to both their clientele. Alistair started in Perrins Transport at the age of 18 in 1968 as a driver. Early on, when Eddie had an accident, Alistair started to take on the management of the company moving to a full time management role as the company grew. Today Perrins Transport covers the South Otago region transporting all kinds of things for farmers including livestock, lime, metal, fertiliser and wool. The company has a fleet of stock trucks, bulk units and spreaders allowing it to even spread ferti- liser for its clients offering a full service. It also has small trucks, so no job is too big or too small. Alistair says constant investment in the fleet is important to ensure the timely and reliable service customers have come to expect over the past 50 years. The most recent purchase was a Kenworth K200 equipped with technology to allow Perrins Transport to haul big loads with greater ease and efficiency. The fleet is backed up by a team of ten including experienced drivers. Included in the strongly family operated business is Alistair’s brother Bill who drives spreaders and nephews Blake and Blair, who are drivers on the stock and bulk units.
