Bark is a dark brown, while tussock is an oatmeal caramel colour. Granite delivers the nostalgic homespun look, taking its cue from the farm’s granite outcrops. Of utmost importance though, the garments are made to stand the test of time — they are garments that the owners will cherish and wear for decades. “At the moment we’re selling on-line through our website and our market is domestic. A lot of them have gone to the cities but many have also gone to rural areas around New Zealand. Our target market is a consumer who is conscious about sustainability and is looking for a durable, long lasting and versatile garment. They want something they can dress up or down, which is why I chose those neutral tones. The market also loves that whole New Zealand made ethos and fashion — they like to look good when they go out and can say it was made in New Zealand.” Through Kate’s every breath, there is absolutely no doubt about her passion for the product and the business she has made happen. But as much as anything she wants to promote the farming story. “I want to get that story of New Zealand wool to as many people as possible because it’s such an incredible product. I want to encourage that long lasting buy once/ adore forever type ethos, rather than buy it once/toss it out. That’s not sustainable and it’s not where we should be heading as a planet or as a people.” Shop online: www.davaarwool.co.nz Instagram: @davaarandco, Facebook: Davaar & Co “I very much get a sense of my family’s ancestry on the farm. We grew up in a loving family environment, taught to get out of bed early in the morning and work hard.” From left: Ben Macdonald (wearing The Wild Wanderer in granite), David and James Macdonald at the launch of Davaar & Co in February.
