We engage an architectural design rm to nalise the plans and working drawings.” Dave stresses that the initial consultation is really important. “You have to really listen to them to understand what their needs are, and develop a concept from that. Working closely with the architectural design rm also ensures the design takes into account its buildability.” While the majority of projects are within the mid Canterbury region, Dave and his team have also been engaged to build dairy sheds as far a eld as Kaikoura and Oamaru. “Over the years we’ve built up a lot of repeat clients. At the moment we’re just building staff housing for a guy who in the past we have built a dairy shed and three houses for. When a client engages me to do the project I stay with the project right to the very end. I’m not one of these guys who does the sale and you never see again. Sure, I have foremen and building crews, but I’m very hands on. The client will work with me throughout the lifecycle of the project. That doesn’t change, the client deals with one person. You de nitely form friendships with your clients over the years.” Dave’s building career spans thirty-eight years; possibly more years than he cares to remember, but he is still passionate about it. “My father had a painting rm for many years in Ashburton and my brother carried that on. The name McCrae is synonymous with the trades. “I’m the sort of person who likes meeting new people, forming lasting relationships and seeing the project through from start to nish, and seeing the delight when people move into their dream home. I get a real kick out of that. The architectural homes are a challenge but they are really good to get into. There are quite a few homes around the place that I drive past and still love.” Beyond Dave’s own team of skilled tradesmen and workers lies a trusted team of subtrades that complement the physical construction of the building. “We work in together and they know how I work and I know how they operate. That makes such a difference to the quality and ef ciency of the project. Our success has been built on that total end to end involvement in the project. Challenges arise, but you always work through things to reach a positive outcome for the client.”
