The company's eight staff are kept extremely busy meeting demand from throughout New Zealand for its services. M D engineering was established in 2000 by Michael Jelley who had worked as a truck mechanic and driver for several years. This experience gave him valuable insight into what makes a great truck and trailer build. While some companies are production orentied, considerable thought is given to the design of each rig, Michael says. The time invested in the design phase of each project is hugely important, not only to understanding the clients needs, but to produce a quality result every time. “The customer comes up with an idea of what they want and we work hard to see if we can work out a solution.” It is also at this stage that design features can be integrated that create ef ciencies and make life easier for drivers, whether it is enabling faster placement or removal of covers, well thought out storage compartments or features speci c to a particular type of unit or transport operation. “That's what its all about; if you make something easier for the driver to do and easier to use and more ef cient then they will use it. Every job we do is different.” It not only means drivers are empowered to do their job better, equipment is better looked after and there is the ow-on effect of improved staff retention through greater job satisfaction, Michael says. New rigs take about 500 to 600 hours work, with the variety of work covering lift-out side tip units, curtain siders, stock trucks, at decks and specialised units such as vacuum or hiab trucks of varying sizes. The quality of M D Engineering's work is recognised nationwide and it has become the preferred transport engineer for companies from the lower South Island to the upper North Island. The company's staff take a lot of pride each time a shiny new rig rolls out of the workshop. An impressive completed mid 2021 was a agship Kenworth K200 with blue LED strips along the sides of the rig, complemented by orange LED's on the front and sides of the cab, including on the radiator and exhaust stacks.
