90 | A more progressive, science-based approach OsGro Seed Services is expanding out of its home base in Blenheim and into Kaikoura and Nelson as it strives to bring good quality agronomy advice to top of the South regions. As an independent company, OsGro Seed Services is strong on good quality advice. “We’re not aligned with any seed company, we just recommend the right seed varieties for farmers’ needs,” says managing director and technical field representative Jeremy Oswald. We can offer farmers really cost-effective agronomy solutions - the right seed for the right situation.”Jeremy says the team at OsGro understands farmers and the current economic situation they are in, and can meet their needs. That’s probably one of the biggest advantages of using our business. We understand farming systems and we also understand the value of forage feeds at certain times of the year. It’s not always about scrimping and saving, it’s about spending your money in the right way.” In the past couple of years as it continues to grow, OsGro has been gaining some traction in the forestry sector as it supplies seed for undersowing cutover forestry blocks. “There is a real need out there for it, and once again, it’s about putting the right seed in the right place,” Jeremy says. OsGro provides a range of cost-effective seed mixes for blanket application for cutover forests. These mixes provide significant ground cover and establish well in most soils and most locations. OsGro’s forestry work has a link for local farmers as well, as more and more farmers are getting into farm forestry. Jeremy says the forestry sector, just like the farming sector is under significant environmental pressure, even more so recently given the extreme weather events of the past three months. “We know that under-sowing cut over forestry suppresses weeds and reduces volunteer regenerative seedling pine growth as well as erosion, and run off and sediment in the waterways. It’s about having a social license. What looks better after 18 months of cutover forest? A bare hillside or a hillside that is greening up and looking good?” OsGro is passionate about contributing scientific developments to the New Zealand agriculture industry and believes in the future of the sector being more efficient, more sustainable, and of more value. We’re excited to be part of the agriculture industry moving away from traditional low-cost practices, and towards a more progressive and science-based approach.” “We’re not aligned with any seed company, we just recommend the right seed varieties for farmers’ needs”.
