50 | Dairy platform repair a specialty service Bernadette Cooney Doug’s Engineering Woodlands, located just 15 minutes from Invercargill off State Highway 1, offers expert and reliable engineering services for farmers. This family-owned business has been supporting dairy farmers in Southland and beyond for nearly 30 years, specialising in dairy platform repair and maintenance, as well as dairy yard design and repair. Andrew and Julie Johnstone have owned and operated Doug’s Engineering for the past three years, after taking over from its founder, Doug McDonald. Andrew leads a dedicated team of six engineers from their Flemington Road premises, where the business has operated for 25 years. One of the standout services provided, is their mobile wear strip milling machine, which is used to rejuvenate dairy platform wear strips. Julie highlights their recent upgrade to a hydraulic milling machine, which smoothes out wear strip bumps and hollows, significantly improving platform efficiency, smoothness, and quietness. This proficient wear strip milling service, pioneered in the South Island by Doug’s Engineering 17 years ago, has become an art form they’ve mastered, with jobs completed as far as Canterbury, Oamaru, and Waimate. “As far as we know, we were the first in the South Island to provide milling machine service for dairy platforms 17 years ago,” says Andrew. RURAL SERVICES » Doug’s Engineering Woodlands In addition to wear strip milling, Doug’s Engineering excels in repairing, replacing, and realigning dairy platform rollers and bearings. Doug’s Engineering also offer dairy yard repairs plus farm machinery and implement repair. “We’ll do yard repairs of all kinds, including posts, rails, top gates and backing gates,” says Julie. “If posts have rotted off or cows have bent or broken railings, give us a call.” The design and fabrication of cow sheds, dairy yards and herringbone milking parlours is another specialty. Doug designs and Andrew and his team carry out the fabrication. “Doug is a very clever man with a wealth of experience and very good at the design side of things,” says Andrew, “so we collaborate with him on CAD design drawings which he’s carried on with as A.D McDonald Design.” “Plus, we’ll repair silage wagons and grabs, pallet forks, harvesters, mowers and all types of farm implements and machinery.” To enhance their capabilities, the company has invested in a new machine press for sheet metal folds. “We bought a new set of rollers as well, so we can form odd-shaped angle irons and box sections,” says Andrew, “also allowing us to roll up wear strips for cow sheds and rings for bale feeders.” Doug’s Engineering workshop has all the equipment required for quality mechanical engineering services including precision machining, aluminium welding, sheet metal fabrication and component profiling.
