| 61 Tapanui’s Kelso Kontracting is offering Southland and Otago farmers a unique and cost-effective alternative to concreting their dairy lanes, feed pads, and silage pits with a system developed out of many years of roading stabilisation work and refined for the agriculture industry. Kelso Kontracting has been working in the rural sector since the 1990s, building tracks and roads and working paddocks, and providing a growing number of specialist services including rock crushing, stump grinding, and mulching as the company’s experience and its fleet of equipment have grown. A big player in the dairy boom of the 1990s, Kelso Kontracting turned its hand to more roading work once the dairy conversion work started to slow. Services provided included the stabilisation of ground for roadways, driveways, and site foundations for civil construction. With concrete the only option facing farmers looking for a hard-wearing, durable surface for their dairy lanes, feed pads, and silage pits, Kelso Kontracting owner Hamish Lawlor saw an alternative with his stabilisation system to provide such surfaces with the use of cement mixed with materials already on-farm. “Farmers need a hard-wearing surface with an almost concrete-like finish, but they don’t actually need concrete,” he says. “We’ve been using this system a lot on roads and now we’ve developed it to make a suitable alternative for dairy farms without the high price tag of concrete.” Using the same machinery and a similar process as it does for its roading stabilisation work, Kelso Kontracting got the idea for refining the system on a visit to equipment supplier FAE in Italy. “We saw the process in action and we were surprised about the amount of cement they were using. We thought this is the way to go and we came home and gave it a try. When we are stabilising roads, there is always tar seal or asphalt going over the top so in a farming situation, we use more cement and it works.” RURAL SERVICES » Kelso Kontracting Ltd Kelso Kontracting has now proven its product on several local dairy farms who are all reporting 100% satisfaction, and the added bonus that this system won’t get slippery when wet and is therefore a preferred solution especially for feed pads. It is quicker and easier to prep for and build and a great solution for large areas. It can use materials already available on-farm, and the end result is hard-wearing enough to take heavy machinery. If the product ever needs to be moved or removed, demolition is a quick and simple process through the mill and mixed back into gravel. Kelso Kontracting is now ready to take their product further afield. “No one else is doing this on dairy lanes. No one else has the experience with it or the equipment to do it. We’ve been refining it for five years and we’ve now proven it on farms with 100% success rate. Everyone has been really happy.” The roading off-season is about to hit for winter and Kelso Kontracting is keen to get out and about with this new solution around Otago and Southland farms.
