Karen Phelps Based in Mid Canterbury, Molloy Agriculture’s agronomy division takes a whole farm approach to management of pests and diseases. “We try to give farmers options in the crop protection space and look at what else can be done before we head for the chemical drum,” says Molloy Agriculture’s Agronomy team manager, Gregor Robertson. “More and more we are challenged with things like herbicide resistance and plant diseases through poor crop rotation. We are continually trying to help farmers and growers move towards a more sustainable approach to cropping, which meets the needs of the farmer as well as the regulators.” He says as an industry there is a need to further knowledge of new crop protection systems. “I believe we need to look after our current chemistry and look at ways to add value to what we already do. I know there are lots of companies working on this and we are excited to see what comes through the pipeline.” He says that Molloy Agriculture’s agronomy is an independent division working directly for the farmer so advice is impartial and free from sales motives. It can assist with advice on a wide range of crops including cereals, seed crops, pasture renovation, winter-feed and silage crops. Molloy Agriculture Ltd started out as an application business and now offers an experienced team of 32, including five seasonal and contracted staff. The company owns and operates nine Bateman sprayers along with seven four wheel drive truck units. Complementing the spraying and agronomy service the company extends its end-to end model with its Bateman sales and service division. This offers recycling via both Agrecovery and Plasback and also offers liquid fertilizer solutions through Ravensdown and Ballance. The company is a member of Rural Contractors New Zealand.
