| 77 Wox system high-tech, high capacity Wilton Agriculture specialises in effluent and muck spreading. Richard Knowler Unashamedly passionate about machinery, Brodie Wilton is also passionate about providing farmers with a quality service spreading effluent and says he gets a great deal of satisfaction from farmers telling him their paddocks are absolutely humming with grass. “A big part of what we’ve done over the last decade is try to change our clients’ mindset around effluent, from ‘we have to clean out the effluent pond’, to ‘we need to get this effluent out to paddock to help grow grass and minimise fertiliser costs’.” Brodie owns and operates South Canterbury based Wilton Agriculture, which he founded to specialise in the spreading of effluent and muck, predominantly for dairy farmers. “I made the decision very early on that we wanted to specialise in effluent and muck spreading, and do that really well,” says Brodie. “It also means we have maintained very good relationships with the many other contractors who are doing cultivation and silage, because we’re not working in competition.” In 2014, Brodie bought a muck spreader for use in the family’s wintering barn, and that was the genesis of Wilton Agriculture. Some contract work around the region followed, along with a slurry tanker to complement the muck spreader, and the business just snow-balled from there. In addition to organic growth, Brodie has bought out two other contracting businesses, one of which specialised in effluent and muck spreading in North Otago; a region which at the time Wilton Agriculture wasn’t servicing. Last year an effluent spreading division was bought from another contractor.” Wilton Agriculture’s fleet of machinery currently includes three Joskin slurry tankers, three muck spreaders, along with several Storth pond stirrers and a fleet of New Holland tractors. Trimble GPS systems in all tractors provide farmers with proof of placement. The jewel in the crown however is a Wox umbilical system. “The main part of our business is umbilical effluent spreading. The North Otago contractor I bought out had a PTO (tractor) driven umbilical system which we ran for a couple of years, but it didn’t do everything we wanted it to do, and there was nothing available in New Zealand that ticked all the boxes. “We wanted a hi-tech, high capacity, very specialised piece of kit, and went to the United Kingdom and looked at umbilical systems. Wox was building a system to a very high standard that had all the features we wanted. They even customised it for our specific needs. “We went to a self-contained engine driven pump trailer with a fifteen-metre boom, and it’s all on RURAL SERVICES » Wilton Agriculture remote control from my IPad. It’s the only system like it in the southern hemisphere, and we can generally work at 200 cubic metres an hour, and on a good day 250 cubic metres. “Because we can pump so much more an hour, that is reflected in our pricing. The system is also very light on the ground compared to slurry tankers that can cause a lot of ground compaction.” Located in Otaio, 20 minutes south of Timaru, Brodie and his team operate throughout South Canterbury and North Otago. It’s the only system like it in the southern hemisphere, and we can generally work at 200 cubic metres an hour, and on a good day 250 cubic metres.” SAVE UP TO $8,000 On your NEW Trimble Display FLEXIBLE TRADE IN OPTIONS Options to suit your needs.
