They grow 21,000 tonnes of potatoes that end up as McCain’s fries and up to 28,000 tonnes of carrots that are turned into juice in a factory in Timaru, as well as wheat, barley, clover seed, rye grass seed and peas. Meanwhile, his second-in-charge for many years at Longlane has taken over management of that farm. The Pye Group is owned by Leighton and Michelle Pye. “We’ve been really fortunate to run a big cropping farm in Mid Canterbury for some really good people,” Matt says of the Pyes. “They have given us the ability to farm this 890 hectares for 20 years and really treat it as our own. They’ve let us make the calls. “They’re busy enough with the rest of their business and they’ve put a lot of faith in us.”
