As cadets gain experience on the farm’s smaller fleet vehicles, they can then move up to start driving the big new tractor. Local dealership Agricentre South is supporting the team to get the most out of the new technology. “We seek out modernisation and find ways to expose our cadets to modern technology. We use a farming app called Resolution that has all our farm records on it, things like animal health, our farm environment plan, staff training, health and safety and hazard maps. We can set tasks for our cadets in that app: we email a notification and they can then find the directions needed in there. We’ve had this app for three years now and have been using it more and more.” This winter, cadets will spend several days learning the finer points of shearing – including nutrition and fitness advice - from renowned New Zealand shearer Stacey Te Huia. As well, they will be gaining insights on winter feed budgeting and crop plans. Last July, Jeff Farm welcomed Josh Gibson (fencer general) and Maisie Young (farm cook) to the team. “Maisie loves showing the cadets how to prepare nutritious meals; Josh has hit the ground running too - he has taken charge of tractor driving and ag work as well as fencing general.” All the team are passionate about encouraging the cadets. Caleb Jones, the farm’s head shepherd and Henry Smith, 2IC, have themselves been through cadetships and bring that perspective to their roles and as mentors. Learning is a priority for staff as well as students, says Michael. “I think it’s inspiring for the cadets to see the senior staff still doing training too – there’s always more you can learn.” Find out more on the cadetships, associated agricultural scholarships and the farm operation at Jeff Farm’s next open day on Saturday, 2nd August.
