| 65 Kelly Deeks Caldwell Contracting continues to evolve In addition to its agricultural services, Caldwell Contracting has expanded into transportation. With its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability, Edendalebased Caldwell Contracting continues to evolve after more than 30 years in business, adding new technology and services to meet the everchanging demands of the farming sector. Founded in 1994 by Alan and Deidre Caldwell, Caldwell Contracting has grown from a single tractor operation to a diversified agricultural service provider with more than 40 permanent staff and 15–20 seasonal workers. The business has consistently been an early adopter of new technologies, including the introduction of New Zealand’s first umbilical effluent system and the implementation of silage trailers to improve operations in wet conditions. In addition to its agricultural services, Caldwell Contracting has expanded into transportation, with a fleet of 11 trucks and trailers handling everything from stock feed to heavy machinery. The company has also responded to local needs by establishing a water delivery service for households and farms across Southland and Otago. “We’re always looking for ways to improve and meet our clients’ needs,” Doug says. “With our skilled team, diverse services, and forward-thinking approach, we’re ready to tackle whatever comes next.” One of the latest advancements from Caldwell Contracting is the acquisition of the latest in umbilical pump technology, significantly enhancing the company’s ability to manage effluent disposal. According to Doug Caldwell, the new system allows for deeper sediment removal and increased efficiency. “We’re getting more out of ponds than ever before,” Doug says. “Our new pump is designed with a turbo filter, ensuring consistent prime and reducing downtime. Farmers have taken notice, and we’re receiving numerous inquiries about it.” Caldwell Contracting has also added a new stump grinder to its woodchipping division, streamlining the process of land clearing, making it easier for farmers to prepare their properties for future use. “With a more favourable economic outlook, farmers are feeling more confident about investing in improvements,” Doug says. “We’re ready to help with whatever they need.” The company’s team of diggers has been busy upgrading dairy lanes and handling various maintenance projects that had been put on hold in previous years. “We’ve undertaken more lane refurbishment jobs this season than in recent memory,” Doug says. “Farmers recognise the importance of maintaining their infrastructure, and we offer a range of materials and services to suit their needs.” Another key focus for Caldwell Contracting this year has been soil aeration following a particularly wet spring. “Now that conditions are improving, it’s the perfect time to aerate the soil,” Doug says. Caldwell Contracting remains committed to providing reliable and innovative solutions, and Doug highlights the enthusiasm of the younger workers joining the team. “It’s great to see new talent coming through, eager to learn and contribute to the industry.” GAVIN HAWKE 027 449 9523 | udc.co.nz PROUD TO SUPPORT CALDWELL CONTRACTING Business Rural South - 10x4 Caldwell Contracting 05.03.25.indd 1 5/03/2025 3:01:22 pm Caldwell Contracting
