Business Rural Winter 2025

Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Renner Fencing Contractors Ltd In a shifting market where work is harder to come by, Marlborough’s Renner Fencing continues to stand tall as a trusted partner for farmers across the region. Backed by more than half a century of experience and three generations of family knowledge, the company remains a go-to for those who need more than just a fence, they need peace of mind. Director Mike Renner is the first to admit that times are challenging. “Work has lightened up a lot in the past six months,” he says. “It’s not just rural fencing, residential and security have slowed too.” Despite this, Renner Fencing is still ticking along thanks to the quality of its team, strong relationships, and an unwavering commitment to doing the job right. For farmers, it’s not just about putting up a fence, it’s about protecting their livelihood. This is where Renner Fencing excels. The team takes pride in giving practical solutions tailored to each property, knowing that every dollar counts. “A lot of guys are asking if we can do things on a tighter budget, whether that’s using fewer posts or different materials, but at the end of the day, we make sure the fence will still do the job,” Mike says. At the heart of the company is the Renner family itself. Terry Renner, who started the business back in 1968, still plays a part, working alongside sons Brad and Mike, who now lead the operation. Brad handles much of the on-ground work while Mike manages the business and client relationships. The brothers have built on the legacy started by their father, adapting the business to meet the changing needs of Marlborough’s rural sector. “We’re still fencing for some of the same families Dad worked for all those years ago,” says Mike. “Now we’re dealing with the next generation, sometimes the third generation, who have taken over the family farms.” This long-standing connection to the farming community is part of what keeps Renner Fencing in demand, even when the market is slow. Renner Fencing has also evolved to meet modern challenges, balancing traditional rural fencing with vineyard development, security fencing, and even specialist projects like forestry and industrial fencing. However, for Mike, Brad, Terry, and the team, it always comes back to rural clients. “A lot of what we do is about trust. Farmers know we’ll be there until the job is done right. That’s our reputation,” says Mike. The staff, too, are a big part of what makes Renner Fencing different. Mike is quick to acknowledge the team’s efforts. “We don’t have many staff issues, but it does feel like sometimes you’re part-psychiatrist, part-mentor,” he says. “That’s just part of looking after your people.” SECURITY.
