Sue Russell RURAL SERVICES » TR Stack Building Limited Terrence Stack grew up in Arundel and went to school in Geraldine. His yearning to become a builder stems back to this time and following school he undertook a pre-trade course in Dunedin, focussing on carpentry. This experience cemented in his mind that becoming a builder was what he wanted to be and when he secured an apprenticeship with Naylor Love working on large-scale commercial projects, it provided him with fertile ground on which to gain life-long skills. “Working for them was such a great opportunity. Being a large company they had all the necessary resources and workload required to train apprentices, they were taking on apprentices every 6 months back then and there were plenty of chances to learn really essential skills,” Terrence says. After Naylor Love, Terrence worked for 2 different builders in Ashburton gaining experience in residential builds, cow sheds, renovations, alterations and pole sheds. He’s been out on his own now nearly 13 years and has moved to focussing mainly on residential work along with farm building projects. In those early days Terrence undertook quite a few spec builds in Ashburton, slowly but surely building up a good client base. “I’ve completed a lot of farm houses and pole sheds and undertaken a lot of retrofit double glazed window projects which are always engaging. I tend to focus on the dairy sector, having established working relationships with Farmright about a decade ago, along with Cumberland Dairy Farm in Klondyke which is now looked after by Arora Dairies from Australia and a large family farming operation in Mt Hutt.” Working with Terrence are a couple of highly experienced contractors and he’s happy with the size and scale of the company, with always two on the job at any one time. “We ride the waves of demand that impact this sector and being small and nimble has certainly helped us maintain a good steady level of work. Certainly a good dairy pay-out impacts positively on service businesses supporting the sector. A benefit of our small company is the close link between myself and the work being completed. Clients seem to appreciate this.” In town Terrence’s main focus are the spec builds and he’s looking forward next year to getting underway on three builds on a large section a block away from Ashburton’s town centre and domain. Ashburton has some new subdivision spaces being developed and Terrence says even some of the region’s smaller settlements, such as Methven are also seeing pockets of land developed into housing, which is encouraging. Asked about a specific build, he recalls a large 400m2 architectural house build at Mt Hutt a few years ago being an ‘enjoyable challenge’. “We are currently altering the woolshed up at Cumberland into an office complex which is something different.” This year, Terrence says, is stacking up well, compared to a quieter last year. “We’ve had years where we’ve been building house after house, however now the bulk of our work is in pole sheds, re roofs, upgrades and renovations. It’s all good challenging work that we enjoy.” Terrence says he enjoys the variety of work that crosses his desk. He grew up on a farm, the youngest of six boys. Today, the three oldest brothers have taken over the family farm. The size of the company at this time works perfectly.
