98 | Fertilisers are a key part of Levity’s contribution to Seed and Field Services. ON FARM » Seed and Field Services (SI) Ltd Levity helps farmers round the world to increase crop yields for potatoes, root and leafy vegetables and, working out of Myerscough Agricultural College, employing its scientists to enhance plants’ natural growth and ripening processes. Lately it has been recording record sales of its products, and New Zealand is a market it regards as something of a microcosm of the global market. Fertilisers are a key part of Levity’s contribution to Seed and Field Services, including Lono for increased yield and fruit size, Albina for quality and shelf life and Indra for improved stress tolerance. Levity’s association with Seed and Field Services coincides with the latter’s recent establishment of a new research and development group as a service for its growers, agronomists and suppliers. The new group is headed by Rob Cox and Steve Slack who used to work together in Rob’s independent company In-Depth Agronomy, but they’ve come together under the Seed and Field Services banner to conduct commercially focused research, and to give the company the capacity to provide specialist advice on all aspects of agronomy. That advice is tailored to the environments that its farmer clients work in, and it allows the company to stay at the top of the steadily unfolding developments and issues facing the industry. From a background in vegetable agronomy, Rob has been a prominent contributor to the New Zealand vegetable industry through his service to a range of research and development committees, and to agronomic extension work. Steve’s background was as an agronomist in Australia where he managed a breeding programme aimed at creating seedless varieties of watermelon and cantaloupe for a bio-tech start-up. In New Zealand he worked with AgResearch on clover and cocksfoot research, and he also has extensive experience in statistical analysis, plant genetics and experimental design. Extension work using regular grower groups and publications is also a key part of the R&D group’s list of responsibilities. • from page 97 At Arxada we’ve combined local intelligence with global scale to become a trusted supplier of specialty ingredients and crop protection products both here in NZ and around the world.
