Kelly Deeks Total Transport Otago is growing its capability and reinforcing its role across the region, keeping Otago farms moving with reliable transport services. On any given day, Total Transport Otago trucks are on the move across the region, shifting stock, spreading fertiliser, and keeping farms running with dependable, practical service. From its base on the outskirts of Mosgiel, the business has built a strong reputation for reliability and versatility, supporting agricultural clients with bulk and general cartage, certified livestock transport, and fertiliser spreading. Owner Bailey Mitchell, who took over the business from his father three years ago, says that flexibility has been key to its growth. “We have focused on creating a service that takes care of multiple jobs,” Bailey says. “That means we can offer farmers and contractors a complete transport solution, whether that is stock, spreading, or general cartage.” The fleet includes nine axle tip trucks fitted with stock crates, allowing the business to maximise efficiency while maintaining high standards of animal welfare and transport capability. With a payload of up to 34 tonnes, the setup enables larger loads to be moved in fewer trips. “It is about getting the most out of each unit,” Bailey says. “We can adapt quickly depending on the job, which is important in this industry.” That adaptability is particularly important in Otago, where farm access can be challenging especially with the 9-axle units. Bailey says the team has developed practical solutions to ensure work continues without disruption, including transhipping loads when required. Supporting the operation is a small but very experienced and capable team. “They are very self sufficient and take a lot of pride in their work,” Bailey says. “Our drivers manage their own trucks and relationships with clients, which takes a lot of pressure off.” Like many in the transport sector, the business is working through ongoing challenges, particularly around staffing. Demand for skilled drivers remains high, with plenty of work available across the region. “There is enough work there, we are just keeping up and keeping all of the trucks busy,” Bailey says. “But you cannot put just anyone into these units. They require a lot of common sense and experience, especially when you are dealing with nine axle trucks and difficult access.” RURAL SERVICES » Total Transport Otago Ltd In an effort to encourage more people into the industry, Total Transport Otago has supported local initiatives aimed at showcasing rural career opportunities. The business was involved in a Taieri rural open day in 2024, working alongside other employers and the Ministry of Social Development. “It was about getting people along and showing them what is out there,” Bailey says. “We had some interest from the open day but finding people with the right capability is still a challenge.” Rising operational costs are another ongoing pressure, particularly fuel and compliance. Bailey says fuel prices have increased significantly, with the business using between 10,000 and 20,000 litres each month. Despite the challenges, the business continues to invest in its fleet and services, with a focus on maintaining efficiency and meeting the needs of a growing region.
