Destination Westland REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT As one of the main gateways to the West Coast, Westland is also one of the most scenic districts in New Zealand and home to spectacular natural landscapes. Destination Westland is proud of the district’s leading reputation for outdoor adventure along with warm hospitality. That spirit of adventure is alive and well this year, with people from all over New Zealand converging on Hokitika this May for the Destination Westland South Island Ultra Marathon. Three events are being held on 14th May on the stunning West Coast Wilderness Trail. Runners taking part will enjoy an ever-changing vista of lakes and reservoirs, rivers, streams and water races, forestry and wetlands, mountain and sea views. They will cross swing bridges and historic tramline bridges and even pass through a western-style town. “This trail has been described by so many as the most scenic mountain bike ride in New Zealand – and now people have the chance to run it,” says Melanie Anderson, Destination Westland CEO. “All three events finish on the beachfront at Hokitika. We’re delighted that the DWC Westland Sports Hub is able to host the race brief on Friday as well as the prizegiving on Sunday morning.” Last year, the West Coast Wilderness Trail scored amongst the top of the New Zealand Great Rides, according to New Zealand Cycle Trails survey data. The trail scored above average on various benchmarks including trail surface, signage and facilities. Most cyclists are on the trail for four days and are spending 50 per cent more on average compared to other trails. The trail is undoubtedly a tremendous asset to the district in uncertain times. The majority of trail users come from Auckland or Christchurch, specifically to get on their bike and experience this outstanding wilderness ride. The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is another key attraction for the region. While the event could not go ahead this year under the red traffic light setting, Wildfoods 2023 is already shaping up to be a not-to-be-missed celebration of all things wild on 11th March 2023. “We are thrilled to have secured all of our 2022 entertainment for Wildfoods 2023, so you won’t miss out on our awesome line up of Sir Dave Dobbyn, Zed, Greg Johnson and Cassie Henderson,” says Melanie. “Our new beer partner, Garage Project, is committed to the Wildfoods Festival and will be back in 2023 with a Wildfoods signature brew.” Fox and Franz Josef are iconic destinations in Westland. Scenic helicopter flights are a popular choice for viewing the spectacular glaciers and alpine scenery, with charters available. Residents of Westland’s biggest town, Hokitika, enjoy good community amenities. The town’s swimming pool was recently refurbished in time for the last summer season and is well-used by local families. Hokitika’s Revell Street is currently being transformed too, providing greater pedestrian use and more seating for the community and visitors alike to enjoy. For business travellers or those not wishing to drive, then flying to this beautiful district is a good option. Air New Zealand operates daily flights between Christchurch and Hokitika. It is worth taking the time to explore this rugged district, lying between the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea.
