South Architects is a multi-award-winning practice with a reputation for unique and considered design that aligns with their clients’ aspirations, as well as site and context. Craig South’s award-winning design – ‘Folded Roof Home’ – exemplifies how exceptional results can be achieved through a responsive, inventive design process. Craig won the 2021 ADNZ Resene Residential New Home over 300m² Architectural Design Award for this spacious family home that beautifully meets the challenges of a sloping section and a narrow street façade. A conundrum at the start of this project was that the clients wanted a home with plenty of natural light but the close boundary to the north ruled out designing typical big windows along that side. “That meant I had to do something clever with the roof form,” says Craig. “I had to twist it to bring in that light from the north into the living areas and then fold it back down toward the west.” The thoughtful design also captures beautiful alpine views to the north-west. Creative roof forms are somewhat synonymous with South Architects. Another award-winning home from the Christchurchbased practice last year was ‘Concrete Copper Home’. It boasts a sculptural copper roof that curves in ways that are quite unlike usual flat or pitch roof norms. Craig won the 2021 TIDA New Zealand Architect New Home of the Year with this home and it was also selected as a 2021 APR Global Future Design Award winner. In addition, it was successful for Clive Barrington Construction, winning the Registered Master Builders’ National Supreme House of the Year. Craig observes that out of the box roof forms can of course be created for aesthetic reasons but in the case of ‘Folded Roof Home’ it was a purely functional design response. “It resulted in an amazing feeling of space from an interior point of view with Gaboon timber ply ceilings also bringing a sense of warmth to the interior.” At the entry, this multi-level home steps down to children’s bedrooms and an associated living area while the upper level has the home’s main living/kitchen area and master bedroom, along with a small media and music room. Large balconies off both levels connect the interior with the views, while a little semi-internal courtyard is a sunny inclusion that’s perfect for the clients’ pot plants. A high level of finish characterises the entry and interior, while the exterior prioritises functional low maintenance materials. The design is cleverly detailed. For example, the home’s two-and-a-half car garage is cedar clad, with the cedar continued inside. It means the internal garage door is hidden seamlessly within the interior finish and externally the garage door is also hidden by cladding. Since moving in, the family has noticed how the high-level windows are sometimes in line with the moon as it tracks across the night sky. “You don’t necessarily plan for something like that but it’s lovely to know that was a by-product of the design!” The award-winning builder for this project was Hillview Construction and a very high build standard was achieved. Craig says Shaun and the Hillview team were very easy to work with through the construction phase of the project. ‘Folded roof home’ a solution to tough site 0800 4 RYLOCK www.rylock.co.nz Rylock Canterbury 260 Dyers Road, Bromley, Christchurch Ph: (03) 373 6040 E: info@rylockchch.co.nz Lifestyle Concepts 91 prefabricated units built offsite at our factory, stored and delivered to site INFO@VFT.CO.NZ 0800 PRE-NAIL WWW.VIPPREFAB.CO.NZ We are passionate about everything electrical and pride ourselves on our professional approach to all jobs big and small.
