Richard Affleck Building’s best advertisers are delighted clients who loved the ease of the building process, great communication and especially the high quality of their completed homes. Richard’s passion for what he does and the enjoyment he gets from dealing with clients is strongly influenced by his time as an apprentice for a company which undertook a lot of bespoke residential builds, he says. “Doing my apprenticeship with a company that did quite complex architectural builds, involving a lot of structural engineering, gave me a good foundation for the type of work we undertake today.” Richard’s business evolved from him building a house for a family friend after he completed his apprenticeship at the age of 22, followed by enjoying a short stint in Australia. He has never looked back. The business now employs four builders, including two apprentices, who are likewise benefiting from working on the high-end architectural houses that Richard Affleck Builders are in high demand for. The company is currently building an expansive 588 square metre house with a 150 square metre guest garage/studio accommodation in a semi-rural setting on the outskirts of Invercargill. Richard was able to be involved early in the design process and was approached when the client had some preliminary plans. “The owners wanted to know our thoughts on the materials, insulation and different finishing details for the build. There was input from the owner, architect and ourselves as the builder.” Building of the generously proportioned Invercargill house is currently in progress with completion expected this spring. It is on a level site on which the owner began establishing trees and landscaping a few years ago. The north elevation has three cathedral-style gables intersecting a 40 degree pitch roof with full height glazing for maximum solar gain. This is repeated on the south, but with a large porte cochère, a covered entrance that vehicles can pass through, serving as the main grand entrance. Aesthetically, the exterior is broken up by incorporating three materials which have different colours and textures; locally sourced dunite stone, vertical cedar and Sto plaster. With hosting and entertaining guests being an important component of the design, the lounge, kitchen and dining areas are in a u-shape around a sheltered alfresco area with an outdoor fireplace. to page 76 M: 027 500 9880 P. 03 215 8518 Em: adam@elitesparkie.co.nz Creative kitchen designs & renovations, and custom joinery reflecting your style and personality.
