South Canterbury - Lone Pine Building BUILDING A string of top House of the Year awards during the past seven years has confirmed Timaru firm Lone Pine Building as one of Canterbury’s premier residential building companies. Co-director Andrew Bell says the Timaru company’s staff and management are especially proud of winning five awards for a house entered in the 2018 Master Builders House of the Year. Lone Pine Building is the only South Canterbury builder to have won the Canterbury Regional Supreme award; also incredibly satisfying has been winning craftsmanship awards - the pinnacle for a builder - multiple times. The 2018 awards achieved were for a rural Ashburton home in the Carters New Home $1 million to $2 million category: Local Supreme, Craftsmanship and Gold awards as well as being the Category Winner. The judges commented that the craftsmanship and intricate detailing of the architecturally designed home was “truly stunning.” “It as an honour and a first, for a Mid-South Canterbury builder to be awarded the prestigious Canterbury regional supreme title and the regional craftsmanship award”, the judges said. The 600 square metre house comprises four wings and is clad mainly in cedar, with the exception of several walls made from West Coast schist providing a nice complement of colour and texture. A key feature is the abundance of highly detailed and highly finished timber throughout the interior which includes Shadowclad plywood on the ceiling and a bamboo floor in the kitchen with beautiful large Timaru bluestone tiles through out . The care and attention taken by the tradesmen to achieve the award-winning result, especially with the extensive timber detailing, was outstanding, Andrew says. “It was a lot of hard work, they put their heart and soul into the build so it was good recognition.” The past two years have been no less significant for top accolades. Last year the Lone Pine team won the 2021 Master Builder House of the Year Regional Silver Award and in 2020 won the Regional Craftmanship Award, Regional Category Winner and Gold Award along with the Gold Reserve Top 100 status for a stunning house near Aoraki Mt Cook. Light and beautifully crafted with a bamboo floor the kitchen is a standout as is the bathroom with expansive views. The Gold Reserve Top 100 award means it was one of the best 100 houses in New Zealand for that year and the third time this award was achieved by the team. Situated on a terrace overlooking the Jollie and Tasman rivers, the five-bedroom, four-bathroom house takes in a breathtaking panorama of the dramatic landscape. With mountain ranges dominating and Aoraki Mt Cook as the pinnacle, the house pays homage to the environment, the heritage of the area and the 2,600 hectare station where it is located. Exquisitely finished, it features both rustic and refined elements, from its exposed interior ceiling beams to a refined high country-style kitchen. Andrew acknowledges the dedication of the Lone Pine tradesmen who worked tirelessly and away from their families to help create such an amazing masterpiece. “Our builders worked four days, a solid 50 hours, away from home in the cold conditions of Mt Cook. “The hardest part of the build was getting the framing and roof up by June 2019, it was so windy and wet. Once the roof was on and windows in, we were away.” Among its current projects, the company is building two architecturally designed homes which will initially be show homes in stage one of the Station Bay development on the shore of Lake Tekapo. Like other Lone Pine projects, the craftsmanship of the build is paramount to this premier development. “The houses are being built to a high specification, there’s a lot of attention to detail and architectural features in the exterior and interior.”
